Strike Syllabus Week 5: Direct Action Gets the Goods – Labor Organizing in History

Week 5’s presentation has us look at labor organizing and its contemporary issues. What does the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) mean when with their slogan “Direct action gets the goods”? The presenters, Thomas (he.him) & Eugene (he.him), will be discussing what direct action is, what it looks like through history, and how it is utilized today. They will also articulate the importance of understanding global labor rights in the face of COVID-19, and how preparation for May Day (May 1st) can invigorate you and your students to use this crisis to assert people’s power. Indeed, this May Day is a call to reimagine our working conditions and to organize against capitalism in tandem with workers all over the world, for a more just and more equitable world.
